Mariapaula
Mother of Indianna (3 1/2 years),  Kostas (8 months)
Vancouver, BC, Canada

What you love about being a mom: Listening to my daughter play make-believe, and seeing the looks on their faces when they make new discoveries.

What you hate about being a mom: All the cleaning!

Confession or Advice to other moms: Get down to their level and look into their eyes when speaking to them…you’ll be surprised at how well they respond.

Che-Yin
Mother of Gabrielle, 4 and Sophie, 11 months
Burnaby, Canada

What you love about being a mom: Unlimited hugs and kisses, deep belly laughs, being a kid again

What you hate about being a mom: My rarely tidy home, trying to make dinner with 2 children yanking on me

Confession or Advice to other moms: Allow your partner to take an active role… he’s more capable than you think.

Alice
Mother of Linnae, 5, Kaylee, 3
Canada

What you love about being a mom: I feel that my kids truly do love me no matter what. My one kid told me the other day that she wouldn’t change one thing in her life. That made me feel good!

What you hate about being a mom: It can be so tiring and it leaves little time for oneself. I miss travelling as I can no longer just get up and go….

Confession or Advice to other moms: Advice…take lots of pictures. Even if it seems like something mundane. The time goes by much too quickly and you’ll be happy you captured those moments of watching them grow up.

Anne
Mother of Gabe 16 and Maya 13 (also Melissa 28)
Coquitlam BC Canada

What you love about being a mom: Watching the kids thrive and grow. When they tell me they love me out of the blue. When they thank me (okay, it doesn’t happen too often, but still…..) When they are affectionate with one another or their cousins and other relatives. When they support each other. When they are having a great time with their friends. When they are funny and fun to be with and we are all laughing together. When I watch their talents grow and feel a swelling of pride. When my oldest one (who joined our family as a teenager) tells me how much she learned about being a mom from watching me. When I watch her being a wonderful mom to her amazing kids and I know the cycle of abuse has ended and a new cycle of loving has begun.

What you hate about being a mom: When the kids are rude and selfish and I wonder what I did wrong. When I watch my childless friends go on trips, buy nice things and do a variety of other self-loving kinds of things that I know I cannot possibly afford, either financially or time-wise. When my kids want things and need things that I really can’t afford. When I am tired and frustrated and their needs are relentless.

Confession or Advice to other moms: Hang in there, the day will come when they are old enough to be grateful and helpful just because they want to be. Enjoy them at each stage, because all the stages pass too quickly (except the teenage years, although I will probably have a different view of even these years sometime soon!) And if you love being a parent and are good at it – or your kids are grown and you wish you weren’t done – think about adoption. There are hundreds of kids, especially older ones, who could really benefit from your love and experience. I know, I did it – and I’m glad I did (even in spite of my answers to question #2!!!)

Danielle
Mother of Cole 7; Kellee 4
H.B. , SK. Canada

What you love about being a mom: I love the unconditional love my kids give me every single day. I can truly be who I am around them and they accept me. I don’t need makeup for them to think I am the most beautiful mom in the world, I don’t need to dress in name brand clothes for them to complement on how good I look. I can sing and dance for them to see and they think wow she is a rock star, I love that!!!

What you hate about being a mom: That I have lost myself a little. My husband still has his sport and continues to do it but I am scared to take away my time with my kids to pursue my love of music. Maybe in time once they get a little older and don’t need me as much I will pick up something just for “me”.

Confession or Advice to other moms: My biggest advice and it is the best advice I have ever been given is your husband/marriage needs to come first and your kids second. This is the hardest thing I find to do but when it is done everything falls into place. Your kids love you unconditionally but your marriage always needs work. And if your marriage is going good your kids are that much happier.

Alessandra
Mother of Celeste, 12
Burnaby, BC

What you love about being a mom: Everything! Especially snuggling and having someone to boss around.

What you hate about being a mom: nothing I hate…lots of things I ‘dislike’, the predisposition that teenage girls have to be contrary to their mothers, being taken for granted……

Confession or Advice to other moms: Don’t take anyone’s advice! follow your gut, it won’t fail you!

JANET
Mother of OLIVE, 16 months
WHITE ROCK, BC CANADA

What you love about being a mom: THE JOY OF DOING EVERYTHING WITH THIS NEW LITTLE FRIEND IN YOUR LIFE THAT YOU’RE CRAZY ABOUT.

What you hate about being a mom: THE FACT THAT WHAT THEY SAID WHEN YOU WERE PREGNANT IS TRUE – SLEEP, AS YOU KNOW IT, IS ABOUT TO DISAPPEAR.

Confession or Advice to other moms: BE READY. SEARCH DEEP WITHIN YOURSELF AND YOUR LIFE AND MAKE SURE THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT AND THAT YOU ARE EMOTIONALLY, PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY and SPIRITUALLY READY FOR IT.

Karen
Mother of Tyson 10, Samantha 7
Vancouver, BC

What you love about being a mom: Watching them grow, learn and experience new things is a great pleasure. When I think back to the day they were born, and all that has progressed since, I realize that it indeed goes by really quickly and that you have to enjoy every minute of it while you can.

What you hate about being a mom: There are not enough hours in the day.

Confession or Advice to other moms: Just because we can’t be there all of the time for our kids, doesn’t mean that we’re not good mothers. There’s only one of us, and usually more than one child.

Dawn
Mother of Madison-4, Melaina 2
Sudden Valley WA

I love being a mom especially in the mornings when the girls are all squishy.
I dont like it when the 2 year old screams and I dont like it when I have to work away from them:(
Be patient, sit with your kids and cuddle them every day, read to them every day…..doing these things makes all the difference.

LINDA
5 Kids ages 32, 30, 28, 26, 24  + 8 Grandchildren + 1 on the way!
BALTIMORE, MD

THE BEST THING ABOUT BEING A MOM IS ALL THE LOVE YOU RECIEVE FROM YOUR KIDS AND LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES THAT EACH CHILD HAVE EVENTHOUGH THEY WHERE RAISED IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT AND ALSO DRESSING THEM UP ON DIFFERENT OCCASSIONS. ALSO SEEING THEM BECOME AN ADULT KNOWING YOU HELPED WITH THAT PROCESS. AND JUST LOVING THEM IN WHAT EVER THEY DO.

THE THING I HATE ABOUT BEING A MOM IS SEEING THEM ALL GROWN UP (WHICH I THOUGHT I WANTED) AND THEM HAVING TO LEAVE ME
AND SO MUCH ATTITUDE ALSO THEM NOT WANTING ME AROUND AS MUCH ANYMORE

THE ONLY ADVICE I CAN GIVE TO ANY MOM IS TO TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS WHERE YOUR CHILD IS CONCERNED BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME IT WILL BE THE RIGHT DECISION. AND TO ALWAYS LET THEM KNOW YOU LOVE THEM EVEN WHEN YOU ARE UPSET WITH THEM DONT LET THE ANGER CLOUD YOUR JUDGEMENT. AND THE BIGGEST THING IS TO KEEP YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT THE OTHER PARENT TO YOUR SELF IF IT IS NEG. BECAUSE THAT CHILD WILL REMEMBER WHAT YOU SAID MAYBE NOT THE EXACT WORDS BUT THE MEANING BEHIND THE WORDS , BUT DONT LIE EITHER TO MAKE THAT PARENT SEEM TO BE SOMEONE THEY’RE NOT.
